State of the City
More Problems
It is said that those who have the most have the most to loose. Never more true any place than Boulder, the city is dealing with issues that threaten aspects to the community.
- The Federal Labs are constantly being vied for by other states. After Oklahoma making a strong push a few years back, now Wyoming is trying to draw the labs to their state.
- Although Part 1 Crimes are down, Boulder has seen a rise in gang activity which had been all but dormant the last ten or so years. Correlated with this activity is the rise of the use of Methamphetamines. The crime does seem manageable though as 6% of all offenders are responsible for 70% of the crime.
- Boulder also continues to be susceptible to flash floods which can happen in the matter of half an hour.
- Urban wildlife management, namely the dreaded prairie dogs are encroaching on needed lands. While unpleasant, Bruno stated that if relocation is not possible, a less than life-friendly approach would be taken.
- Being in Colorado, water use is always an issue with usage for the year is expected to be up 10% from the previous year. Conservation is key, but Bruno focused on the supply side as well stating that we’re going to need a big winter.
- Also of mentionable consideration was dealing with students and alcohol abuse, the building of a conference center, and an issue close to Boulder Tomorrow’s heart, energy use.
