From the Fertile Ground
Boulder's Economic Vitality Program began 4 years ago in 2003 as a reactionary action. Local businesses were leaving Boulder to relocate to surrounding counties while those businesses looking to move to Colorado opted for the same. From this climate, the city set out to 1. Find out the reason and 2. Work towards changing the tide.
Ray Wilson spearheaded the effort to find out the 'why'. Setting out to get an insider's perspective, Ray interviewed both local business and those that wished to move to the area. Over 30 business leaders from a wide spectrum of industries were questioned.
The most prevalent responses to not do business in Boulder were found to be:
- Lack of space
- Cost of doing business
- Lack of City of Boulder involvement
- Interest from other communities
Using this data, the Economic Vitality Program was able to focus their efforts towards best serving the needs of the local business.
